Ingrown toe nails are known in medical terms as onychocryptosis. It is a common and painful condition that occurs when the toe nail itself grows into the skin. It can also occur when the skin on the edges of the toe nail starts growing over the edges. It is usually a result of an infection in the toe nails. Some of the common effects of this condition are redness, itchiness and swelling of the toe.

There are many causes of ingrown toe nails. A very common cause is cutting the toe nails incorrectly, which allows the nail to grow into the skin. In addition to this, tight shoes and socks may increase the pain. Ingrown toe nails may also lead to infection as the ingrown nail is almost always present in a warm and bacteria friendly environment. If the nail is red, itchy and swollen, then be sure, an infection is present. Another cause of ingrown toe nail is that the nails may be too large. People whose toes curl are more vulnerable to have ingrown toe nails. Trauma, such as having the toe stepped on, may also cause ingrown toe nails.

If this condition is left untreated, then the toe nail can go deep into the skin, causing severe infection which is cured only with antibiotics. However, once the condition is recognized in its early stages, then it can be treated immediately. This can be done by soaking the feet in warm water, drying them with a clean towel, applying a mild antiseptic cream or lotion and finally, bandaging the toe neatly. If there is severe infection or excessive swelling, then it should be treated by a doctor. He/she will trim or remove the infected nail with a small surgical procedure.

There are many ways of preventing ingrown toe nails. Cutting one's nails properly is a very important way to prevent this condition. Wearing shoes which are comfortable for the toes is also a useful precaution.
